Special Olympics

As Trustees we have recently expanded the footprint of the charity by forming Special Olympics Oxfordshire, utilising OXSRAD as the central admin and sports site to support this wonderful organisation for people with learning difficulties. In the first few months we have provided the opportunity for teams to travel and compete in a Special Olympics Regional football competition in Bournemouth and we are currently working with local specialist coaches to enable local people with learning disabilities to form an Oxfordshire Basketball team too. Further sports are in the pipeline. The enthusiasm of the players is fantastic and the commitment of the coaches and volunteers extremely humbling yet tremendously rewarding. The aim of the Special Olympics organisation, which now includes Oxfordshire due to the initiative and on-going support of OXSRAD is as follows;

“To provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people (8-80+ yrs old) with learning disabilities giving them the continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of skills, gifts and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.”
